Now present, retired government employees and even people who have been residing inside government housing without any legal evidence can purchase government housing by paying identical amount decided by the state government. West Bengal government is likely to reveal fixed property price for government housing estates. It’s jubilant news for people who are seeking low-budget flats in Kolkata. The occupants can book such apartments within 180 days time period after the state government price declaration; else they will have to face an eviction.
This proposal refers to LIG (low income group), MIG (middle income group) and HIG (high income group) housing estates. There won’t be any further addition in these three category housing unit development as government has decided not to develop new complexes under this scheme anymore.
Government is now concentrating upon selling the on hand residential estates rather than developing new ones. All the government officials and employees, who are the inhabitants of such housing complex, can revel in the ownership of individual properties after paying the same amount set by the state government. This offer is open to all former government employees and unauthorized residents who are residing in these housing estates for quite a some time now. Housing minister of West Bengal Shovan Chatterjee declared this in an official statement.
Government doesn’t want people to uproot from their existing residence, thus, they are extending the opportunity for illegal inhabitants too. Housing department is likely to finalize the price soon. But, it’s assured the rate will be affordable to the homebuyers. As per the official sources, government housing sector has been turned out as a non-profitable resource for the state. As, the rents earned from these apartments are of ground-level. Moreover, government has to pay excess money for the renovation ands yearly maintenance purpose for these apartments. Thus, expenditure overpowers the revenue earned from this sector, which is catastrophic to government’s vault.
Again, some of the rented apartments are kept separate from this purview. Even, co-operative can be set up for increasing the opportunity. Asking on this context West Bengal RERA expert Mr. Mahesh Somani said, “Again it’s a favorable initiative by the West Bengal government to put low-budget flats in Kolkata on the map. Government already has granted infrastructure status to affordable housing sector. Urbanization of affordable housing sector will take state's growth ahead.”
